ThingOS is a platform made to integrate all kinds of smart devices which provides a technology-neutral layer. On this layer, ThingOS apps can operate and connect smart devices, sensors and actuators. This interoperability allows ThingOS customers to drastically speed up the development process of smart connected applications. ThingOS performs best wherever two or more different technologies need to be bridged, which is the case for an increasing number of application domains. Three of our target domains will be highlighted below: Smart Factory, Smart Home/Object and Smart Retail.
Today, the industrial technology landscape is already very fragmented and, with the exponentially rising number of connected devices, the fragmentation will increase accordingly. ThingOS’s approach to this trend is radical integration. ThingOS takes care of the difficult part of integrating any communication technology and/or platform in order to provide a technology-neutral layer. This interoperability then makes it possible to rapidly connect heterogenous machines, to realise complex processes and to drastically simplify programming tasks for both experts and end-users.
This was demonstrated during multiple cooperative projects at ARENA2036 with companies such as Daimler or Hewlett Packard Enterprise. In collaboration with Daimler, a flexible assembly platform was equipped with ThingOS. As a result, various wireless and wired hardware sensors can now be pluged in at runtime and easily be utilized by any worker without PLC/SPS programming. Together with HPE, a Smart Order Picking application for intralogistics was implemented – based on ThingOS and connected to HPEs Universal IoT Platform – in order to easily manage and analyze processes in many various locations.
Smart Home and Smart Object
In smart home and smart object environments (such as hotels or restaurants), ThingOS serves as a great platform to integrate any kind of heterogenous mobile device, smart sensor and actuator. ThingOS can integrate off-the-shelf smart home devices with customer products and additionally connect them to existing infrastructure like KNX or DALI.
ThingOS apps for smart home and smart object environments may be equipped with a fixed, predefined functionality or can provide end-users with intuitive interfaces, enabling them to customize their smart home and smart building according to their individual needs. This ranges across simple controls, smartphone and tablet graphical user interfaces as well as voice-controlled virtual assistants.
Sensors at the point-of-sale (POS) can provide various benefits. The customer can be targeted individually by displaying only content he is interested in, instead of the classical static image and video. Interaction with displayed goods can be enhanced by smart behavior which improves the customer experience.
Smart, interactive POS applications that provide clear added value to retail and end-users can easily be realized utilizing ThingOS applications. At Retail Tech Hub, we currently evaluate innovative solutions with partners such as MediaMarktSaturn and the Lidl Schwarz Group. We regularly present results at the ITH (Innovative Technologie für den Handel), among others.
